\paperw5085 \margr0\margl0\ATXph16380 \plain \fs20 \f1 \fs22 Stonehenge is a mysterious \ATXnt901 prehistoric sanctuary\ATXnt0 near Amesbury, in southern England. It originally
consisted of a circle of 30 upright stones, their tops linked by lintelstones to form a continuous circle about 30 metres across. Within the circle was a horseshoe arrangement of five trilithons (two uprights plus a lintel, set as five separate entities)
, and a so-called \ATXnt902 æaltar stoneÆ\ATXnt0 : an upright pillar at the open end of the horseshoe, facing the direction of the rising sun. In use around 3100-1100 BC, \ATXnt903 Stonehenge\ATXnt0 was constructed in three phases: c. 2800 BC, a low ban
k and ditch of earth about 110 metres in diameter; c. 2100 BC, a double ring of 80 pillars of South Wales bluestone, apparently dismantled before completion; and c. 2000 BC, the surviving monument. The alignment on the midsummer sunrise/midwinter sunset
suggests that prehistoric man used it for \ATXnt904 seasonal festivals\ATXnt0 or as an observatory.
